Falls, slips, and trips accounted for 39.2% of all construction fatalities — over 300 fatal fall-related injuries annually for more than a decade. Fatal falls predominantly occurred from heights between 6 and 30 feet, with portable ladders and stairs identified as the leading specific cause (109 fatalities). Struck-by accidents were the second most common cause of death, with approximately 75% of struck-by fatalities involving heavy equipment or machinery.
The financial consequences are substantial: the average cost per medically consulted construction injury is estimated at $40,000, with total annual costs exceeding $11.5 billion. Over a 45-year career, a construction worker has a 75% chance of experiencing a disabling injury.
Mental health has emerged as an additional concern: construction has among the highest rates of workplace suicide and substance abuse of any industry, though these incidents are often not captured in traditional safety metrics.
What this means for safety managers: The persistence of falls as the leading cause reflects the challenge of translating WHS regulations into consistent site-level behaviour. Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) for working at heights are legally required — but evidence suggests they are frequently incomplete, outdated, or unread by workers.
